Big fish first time out, March 23, 2005 By I bought two of these for my wife and myself. I mounted them on 6' boat rods and spooled them with Tuf Line (80lb for me,65lb for her). We do bottom fishing out of Destin, Fl. I was eager to try these 2-speed reels and selected the Daiwa because I liked the gear ratios and the lever drag.
Boy, did I make a good choice!
This is the first time I have used a lever drag, and I loved it. I set the strike drag for 15lbs. Moving the drag lever down reduces the drag gradually to free-spool. I used the drag lever to allow the rig to go to the bottom with no danger of backlash.
The two speeds are fantastic. I put it in low gear (1.7:1) when on the bottom to give me the power to get a big fish up out of the structure as quickly as possible, and cranking power while it is fighting the hardest. The high gear (4.1:1) is used when the fish tires or to bring the rig up to check bait.
