Great spin cast to catch fish, July 4, 2010 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Abu Garcia Abumatic 170i Series Spincast Reel, 12-Pound/140-Yard (Sports) I have used spin cast reels for about 50 years and all have bee used in fresh and salt water. All the ones I have, Johnson and Daiwa, are fine reels and still work well since I rinse them well in fresh water after salt use. When I saw the 700i was rated for salt I could not get one quick enough. I have used it a few times and what a reel! I refilled it with Fireline 14 pound line when I first got it and it cast further than imaginable with a Carolina rig and a 1/2 oz. weight. It always works flawlessly and has the most accurate and smooth drag possible. For just plain ole fun and efficient fishing this reel is simply unbeatable. Heck, I bought a 1276SLi for backup and now I can't figure out which to use. I have to do something I never do, I have to thank Abu Garcia for building these reels.
By the way, Amazon, you really should show the 700i in your add for same.

The first time I went out fishing with it I didn't have any problems. The casting was smooth and the drag was easily adjustable to my needs. However on my last fishing trip I went to cast and the reel locked up completely mid cast. Now it will no longer reel or cast. I tried everything to fix it. It seems as if the button is stuck and will not disengage. With all the reviews I read that raved about how great this reel was, I certainly did not expect to have this kind of problem. Gonna try another Abu reel but my confidence in their products has definitely gone down.

This reel is an update to the original design with ball bearings at key wear points and continuous anti-reverse. The "Star Drag" is outstanding and greatly minimizes the line twist.
I've just used the new reel a couple of times and it seems to perform better than the originals. Hopefully it will be as reliable and durable.
I recommend this reel to my friends.
